Lady Elliot Island is a Coral Cay of 42 Hectares (100 acres) in area with a low key 49 room resort situated on the Great Barrier Reef. The island has its own airstrip which is located on the eastern side and serviced daily by Whitaker Air Charter.

Lady Elliot Island is a true Coral Cay which has evolved over thousands of years and is an important sea-bird and turtle rookery site. Whales can also be seen passing by from June to October.

Guest numbers are limited on the island and this allows first hand experiences of nesting birds - some 50 species including the unique Red Tailed Tropic Birds. Green and loggerhead turtles come ashore between November and March to lay their eggs and after the incubation period - normally eight weeks - you have the unique opportunity to see the turtle hatchlings scurrying to the ocean.

The Island is a popular Scuba diving and snorkelling location due to its interesting dive sites.

Activities

• Diving & Snorkelling
  Experienced divers and snorkellers can join one of our regular group dives, where our qualified dive staff will take you to their favourite reef sites - swim with the majestic manta rays at the Lighthouse Bommie, drift dive in the late afternoon at Encounters, or explore secret caverns at the Blow Hole and Hiro's Cave.

Dive sites are accessed either straight from the beach or via a short boat ride. Visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres, with water temperatures ranging between 18 and 27 degrees Centigrade.

The lagoon area is ideal for novice snorkellers and you'll find enough tropical fish and colourful coral to keep you out there for hours. Snorkelling lessons for beginners are conducted in the pool.

Don't forget to allow a minimum of 12 hours surface time between diving and flying. Divers must produce a C-Card and Log Book prior to diving. You can either bring your own gear or hire everything you need from the Dive Centre.

• Glass Bottom Boat Tours: A great way to see the majestic manta rays, dolphins and whales (in season) without getting wet!
  
• Reef Walking: When the tide is low, you can venture all the way through the lagoon from the beach to the reef edge. You'll see a multitude of marine life as our experienced guide introduces you to the complexities of the reef eco-system.
  
• Nature Walks: Learn about the unique eco-systems on a coral cay during our guided walks around the island.
  
• Whale Watching: From June to October, the great humpback whales make their annual migration from the Antarctic to the warm waters off the central Queensland coast. You don't need to go out on a boat; just sit and watch the passing parade from the beach or reef edge.
  
• Turtle Watching: From November to February, Green and Loggerhead turtles come ashore at night to nest. Our guides will help you find the best vantage point without disturbing the turtles while they lay their eggs or the tiny hatchlings as they make their way to the water.
  
• Fish Feeding: A multitude of reef fish appear at the "fish pool" everyday, and our activities officer will show you how to hand feed them
  
• Slide Shows & Evening Lectures: Learn more about the Great Barrier Reef and Lady Elliot Island during our evening presentations in the Reef Education Centre.
  
• Junior Reef Rangers Club for youngsters from 5 to 12 years, which runs during Queensland school holidays.
  
• Other activities include: Archery, volleyball, badminton, frisbees, ping pong, darts, pool, cards and board games.

Lady Elliot Island Resort provides four different types of accommodation ranging from our specially designed Tent Cabins to our Island Suites. All our rooms are fan cooled and there are no televisions, radios or telephones to remind you of the life you've left behind.

The following descriptions give you a detailed understanding of the accommodation:

TENT CABINS

We have fourteen Tent Cabins available for guest use. The cabins have a capacity of four people(bunk style beds) or two people if a double is requested and available. The accommodation is structured in such a way that it offers a polished timber floor, power and lighting. Doors and windows make the tent cabin quite a spacious and well tempered area. All cabins are close to communal bathroom facilities. Each Tent Cabin also features storage space and a covered patio at the front of the unit.

REEF UNITS

Twenty four rooms in all, these rooms all have private bathroom facilities and tea/coffee making facilities, are fan cooled and the majority have a brilliant coral lagoon view. Most units are designed with a double and two bunk beds, making it ideal for families. Some units have a double bed only. All rooms have a private balcony with seating facilities. The Beachfront Reef Units are about 2 metres away from the beach and contain tea and coffee making facilities.

ISLAND SUITES

These four spacious apartments are situated near the coral lagoon and about two metres away from the beachfront, are fully self contained with tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar, fridge, fan cooling and private balcony. This ideal living area can accommodate up to six people. Both one and two bedroom island suites are available. Please note that there is a minimum 2 night stay in the 1 and 2 bedroom Island Suites.
